Blowing your ACL is one of the worst things to happen to you
in the beginning of the season. Sadly, I
did it this year. Basically, your out
riding for the rest of the season, have to go through a grueling knee surgery,
and prepare yourself for a month or so on crutches and 6-9 months of recovery
and rehab time. Say goodbye to surfing
your summers away, longboarding during the cool nights, and any other kickass
activity to do during the summer. But,
by the time winter comes around, you’ll hopefully be able to get back on that
mountain, not be nervous about tearing it again and man up to that jump that
tore it to begin with.
This is
just a horrible journey anyone would have to go through, so I am here to the
rescue. While I am down and out for the
season, watching all of my asshole friends post pictures of the sweet time they
are having up north and out west, I’ve decided to enlighten you with some
health tips to keep you in tip top shape on and off the mountain. Here are my top 5 health tips to keep you
shredding:
1. Be in shape.. always. If you don’t know why this would be a tip..
then you should never snowboard.
Never. Plus girls love a guy with
a nice bod.. it’s not just a rumor.
2. Use the right gear. This is crucial. If your boots don’t fit what makes you think
your going to be comfortable on the mountain?
What’s the point of riding a small park board if you’re never in the
park? This is where you have to access
your riding, your skill, and also your comfort.
Being comfortable on the mountain is key.
3. Protect your brains. We’ve all done it.. fuck the helmet let’s
rock the beanie instead. This can lead
to a serious issue, life and death type of issue. Wearing a helmet not only saves your brain,
but also gives you a little bit more guts to nail that dope rail you’ve been
eyeing up. There’s just something about
the security of a helmet. Why not spend
the extra $20 and get the helmet with the headphones as well?!
4. “Never call last run”. We all know this. It’s engraved in every true snowboarder’s
brain.. and we all say it for a reason.
It’s true! Most injuries while
snowboarding happens at the end of the day... and sadly to say I fall into this
statistic. This is when our bodies are
exhausted and are ready to rest. Once
the feeling of exhaustion sets in, just go home. Get excited… your boots are about to come
off. Just avoid the injury and be happy
that you rode the day away.
5. STRETCH and keep hydrated! Do this before and after riding. It will help you loosen up muscles that have
been tight before riding, preventing strains, and will help you loosen up the
muscles that you just worked out while riding.
This can make the next day after riding a lot easier to deal with. You won’t be as sore and will be excited to
ride the next day. If you’re at a hotel,
take advantage of the pool and hot tub facilities… they come in clutch and top
off a day of riding.
These top 5 tips hopefully will help your riding and keep
you in tip-top shape for the mountain.
So go shred that pow, hit the park and have some fun.. while I’m here,
watching snowboarding films and trying to walk again.
